Jesus chose ordinary, mostly uneducated men as His apostles. Of their own accord, they were not qualified. But by the very act of being called by Jesus, they became qualified. Jesus then built a relationship with them and gave them a mission.
Their mission was to preach the kingdom of God, similar to how He was sent by the Father. Their commission, vocation, and calling are ours. While we may feel relaxed about sharing our faith in serving the poor, speaking out against injustice, and being good citizens, our primary purpose as the Church is evangelization. As the Church, our purpose is to spread the gospel and make Christ known. In the same way that Christ sent out His twelve apostles, we are sent to proclaim the kingdom of God.
This kingdom of God here on earth is the reign of God’s love, justice, and peace. This reminds us that we should never privatize the mission. We should always bear in mind that we are only stewards and care-makers and not owners and proprietors.
Each of us is clothed with the responsibility of bringing God’s message and healing to those we encounter. May we never fail to fulfill this mission whenever and wherever we find ourselves.
