Daily Readings Reflection
In our Daily Readings Reflection for today, we come to see that suffering and misery are universal experiences. The difference between us is how we interpret and respond to them. Some people may get disturbed, agitated, aggressive, critical, despondent, cynical, doubtful of their beliefs, or even give up. These sentiments are depicted in today’s narrative, when Jesus is rejected by a Samaritan community owing to prejudice toward Jews. Consequently, James and John grow irritated and outraged, intending to annihilate them with fire from heaven.
However, some people stay strong, rooted, and devoted in the face of difficulties that both challenge and strengthen them. Jesus exemplifies this positive mindset by neither criticizing the Samaritans or rebuking the disciples for wanting to destroy them. Jesus continues on his journey to Jerusalem without being discouraged or hindered.
Job, a cheerful, affluent, and well-respected man, exemplifies resilience even as he laments his sorrow. The severity of Job’s hardship and pain does not indicate disillusionment or a loss of faith, but rather a determination to believe and act correctly.
As Christians, we too will face our share of trials and tribulations. When such moments arrive, we are being cautioned to remain steadfast and unwavering in our faith. Things will not always be easy or rosy. It is not always that things will work in our favor. Nonetheless, giving up or denouncing our faith should not be an option during such times. Let us pray for God’s grace to empower and strengthen us to better respond to the uncertainties of life like Job or Jesus did.
