Jesus uses the metaphor of a lamp to illustrate the importance of faith in our Christian life. Faith is the light that keeps the lamp burning, and it should not be a mere tradition or name’s sake. Our faith, therefore, must be radiant and vibrant, allowing us to be lamps with light. To live a faith-lighted life, we must live a life of integrity and witness, benevolence, and avoiding unnecessary contentions against others. This includes being sincerely prompt, kind-hearted, and not evasive from fraternal obligations. We must be positive-minded and trustworthy, not planning evil against others, and not evading our obligations. By living a faith-lighted life, we can spread light and be a beacon of hope for others.
Moreover, as Christians, the concept of benevolence involves detesting and avoiding the ways of the violent, devious, and scornful. It involves being humble, upright, and righteous, guarding against arrogance and wickedness. This benevolence requires wholeheartedness and a spirit of abundance, as Jesus says, “To the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
Such benevolence is evident in the life and mission of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who was a humble man. He was authentic, modest, and moderate, unable to be attracted by worldly abundance. He became a popular saint and a family saint for many families due to his simple life as a neighbor.
May we strive to use every opportunity to make our lights shine so bright for others to see.
