The desire for forgiveness is a fundamental human desire, a desire that is present in all individuals, regardless of their sins. Sexual sins like adultery, fornication, and prostitution may have a greater impact on individuals than those who commit other sins. Regardless of their sin, every human being needs God’s grace, His free and unmerited gift of forgiveness. The prostitute who washed Jesus’ feet with tears, dried them with hair, and anointed them with ointment exemplifies a humble and grateful heart, an icon of forgiveness that will stand for all time. She loved much because she had been forgiven, and we are called to emulate her example.
We are reminded today that God forgives our faults if we deepen our love for Him and fall at His feet, as love serves as the foundation for God’s forgiveness and the renewal of human life.
The contrast between the self-righteous Pharisee and the sinner-woman is striking. The Pharisee’s approach was formal hospitality, while the sinner-woman’s love was profound and extravagant. Her extravagant gestures, such as sitting at Jesus’ feet, kissing, washing, wiping, and embalming, were personal and driven by a profound love for Jesus.
This sinner woman teaches us a practical lesson: love God passionately and it will take care of the rest. Love makes us humble, accepts our unworthiness, and drives us to surrender to God’s mercy. It ignites a burning ardour to rise up from our imperfections.
While our frailties and imperfections are abundant, the grace and mercy of God are superabundant. Once we encounter grace, the change will be radical. Love and passion for the Lord should be the only overriding force.
Both Paul and the sinner woman allowed themselves to be overwhelmed by God’s mercy and responded with a “crazy” love.
St. Francis de Sales affirmed that “love makes the lovers alike.” If we truly love God, we cannot but avoid what is contrary to Him and grow in His likeness.
